LEVEL-3 ONBOARD SPECTRA PARAMETERS

Format: f10

                  Level-3 Spectra Parameters, version 1.2 (type-2)

                       ERNE on-board spectra format-10

Parameters for constructing the 'official' ERNE level-3 spectra from level-2
  on-board spectrum counter tables.

  Energies
  --------

Enom = Foil corrected channel energy [MeV/n]

               - For LED this is the arithmetic average of the energies at
the low- and hi-limit of the channel.

               - For HED the average is weighted by the varying geometric
                 factor inside the channel.

Emin = Minimum energy of the channel [MeV/n]
Emax = Maximum energy of the channel [MeV/n]

               - Emin and Emax values are currently calculated from various,
                  possibly slightly coflicting data sources.

        See NOTES below.

  GdE
  ---
GdE = (Geometric factor) x (Energy channel width) [cm^2 sr MeV/n]

        See NOTE 2 below.

  On-board E-index
  ----------------

The on-board energy index of the channel. Energy index iE gives the
nominal (uncorrected) total energy [MeV] at the channel low-limit from
        the formulas:

           LED: Elow = 2^(iE/3) MeV/n
           HED: Elow = 10 x 2^(iE/3) MeV/n

  NOTES:
  ------

  1. The foil energy losses have been corrected for. Exception is the recently
found plastic between HED D2 and D3.

  2. The tabulated values (both Energies and GdE) are calculated for a flat spectrum.

The numbers are from two diffrenet sources. The channel energies are from
      a file '/usr/srl/pro/para/f10_matriisienergiakanavat_LED_ja_HED.txt'.
The GdE values are calculated from GF and dE values used by C-program
      'SClev2to3' version 3.6, files 'MatrGf.p.par' and 'MatrGf.He.par'
Both sources present nearly the same (but not exactly the same) dE-values.
Thus is it assumed that the Energy values from the former source are
compatible with the data from the latter.

  3. In the original energy limits for HED (Emin and EMax) there was typically a
0.1 MeV artificial gap between the channels. This was because of the coarse
grid in GdE calculation. This has been manually corrected for by lowering each
HED Emin value by 0.5 MeV and increasing each Emax value by 0.5 MeV. For this
reason if one calculates channel widths from this data they don't match the
      corresponding widths used in GdE-calculations.

  4. Because of what is said above:

        a) Channel energies here should be considered provisional.
        b) Channel E-limits should be used for informative purposes only.

  5. The last proton channel corresponds to particles that should penetrate the
instrument, thus the dE-value (and consequently the GdE also) is 0. To reflect
this all the energy parameters are set to same value 140.0, which is the
absolute maximum detected energy of the instrument.

  Version history

  1.3 - 2002-10-04 (ER)

Changed all proton energy parameter values for channel 23 to 140.0 and
updated note 5. See the note for clarification.

  1.2 - 2002-09-11 (ER)

Added minimum and maximum energies for the channels.
This is designed as 'type-2' parameter table format.

Changed numeric accuracy to 4 significant numbers for all the data.

  1.1 - 2002-06-14 (ER)

Doesn't exist. Skipped in order to retain minor version sync with
        version 3-series (f30,f40,f50,...).

  1.0 - 2002-06-14 (ER)

        Original version.
