A X-ray flare of class X1.6 started at 00:47 UT on October 19 and lasted for 26 minutes. The flare was located in NOAA active region 9661 (N16° W18°). A halo coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred at the same active region. A series of M-class flares followed the first X1.6 flare from different positions on the solar disc. A metric type II radio burst seems to start at 00:58 UT and a decametric type II burst was observed starting at 01:15 UT.

On October 21, the shock passage was registered near the Earth's orbit.
