1997 May 15

Event of 1997 May 15

The Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) produced a shock wave which caused the decrease of cosmic ray proton intensity. The interplanetary shock passed SOHO at 00:56 UT on May 15. The duration of the decrease in the high energy proton counting rate was 8 hours. The counting rate dropped at 9 UT and stayed at the level 7 % below the rate prior the arrival of the shock the next 12 hours. The decline was not linear. The recovery of the intensity back to the pre-shock level took 5 days.
